Why is it important to keep my Windows computer up to date?
Microsoft frequently updates the Windows operating system.
These updates have several aspects, including but not limited to:
- Fixes for problems (i.e. “bug” fixes)
- New features
- Security patches
Regular updates are the #1 way to keep your desktop or laptop computer running well.
We’ll show you how to keep your Windows computer updated so it performs the way it’s supposed to.
How can I be sure my computer is ready to receive updates?
To make sure that your computer can get all Windows updates when needed, make sure you have adequate free disk space at all times.
Windows updates can require a lot of temporary disk space. Therefore, you should have at least 15 GB (gigabytes) of free space on your C drive.
If you don’t have enough space for Windows updates, you might need to free up space. Check out the following Microsoft article for details.

- In the Settings app, click on “Update & Security”.
- Make sure that “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” is turned ON.
